The aim of this thesis is to understand and describe a new form of power that emerged in the Afar National Regional State in northeastern Ethiopia. In 2004, a new form of power, in the person of As Mohammed Humed Yayyo asserted monopoly control over Dobi salt mining land. Dobi is the second biggest salt mining site in Ethiopia, excelled only by the Afdera Salt Lake.
